Explorer of the Seas
Explorer of the Seas is a Voyager-class cruise ship completed in 2000 that initially featured a built-in atmospheric and oceanographic laboratory operated by the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School, though this educational program was discontinued in 2007. At launch, the ship briefly held the distinction of being the world's largest passenger ship before being surpassed by Navigator of the Seas. Major upgrades in 2015 replaced the inline skating rink with a Flowrider surfing simulator, and the vessel was notably used to house rescue workers involved in the Surfside condominium building collapse recovery effort.
Explorer of the Seas measures 311 metres in length with a beam of 49 metres and spans 15 decks. The ship accommodates 3,282 passengers on a lower berth basis across 1,641 cabins and is supported by a crew of 1,180. Propulsion is provided by Wartsila engines, and the vessel operates at a service speed of 24 knots.
