Mixed outlook for biofuels in the offshore vessel market

Mixed outlook for biofuels in the offshore vessel market. Maritime Sustainability News

Biofuel Regulations Split on Offshore Sector

Regulatory divergence is emerging in the biofuel landscape, with implications that extend beyond offshore vessels to ferry and passenger ship operators monitoring sustainability policy developments. Norway has moved to exclude biofuels as a recognised mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions under its new regulations, while Brazil is pursuing an opposing course, advancing plans to deploy ethanol as a marine fuel (Maritime Sustainability News). For ferry operators already navigating a complex patchwork of regional emissions rules, the Norwegian position is notable given the country's outsized influence on maritime environmental standards and its large domestic ferry fleet. The Brazilian ethanol push, meanwhile, reflects a broader trend among biofuel-producing nations seeking to leverage domestically available feedstocks to meet decarbonisation targets in shipping. Today's coverage is thin across the ferry and passenger ship technology beat, with no major newbuild orders, deliveries, or technology announcements reported.

On This Day

On this day in 2008, the Independence of the Seas was christened in Southampton, the largest cruise ship ever to homeport in Europe at the time.
